WORKSHOPS

Presented by Blacksmith's Daughter: Arts Programming and led by many of the event's performers, along with guest artists, to help the
audience avoid passive engagements with the themes and movement explored onstage, public workshops will be held all day on Saturday,
March 17, 2007, at the Kumble Theater. Full-day registrants may participate in Mind/Body classes led by Equinox fitness instructors and
will receive free admission to a performance of their choice.

A class schedule is available for download here; click here to complete a registration form.

WOOMENMOVES:
MY IMAGE NOT CAPTURED BY THE CAMERA'S EYE:
A WOMAN'S WORKSHOP FOR SELF-EXPRESSION

This body-voice workshop explores the impact of
media-derived definitions on women's identity—
Superwoman syndrome, body imaging, calorie watching,
forever young—commercially portrayed on television and
in print ads. Working within an interactive listening space,
we’ll use movement, breath work, voicing and journaling as
tools to both listen to each woman and hear ourselves freely
express, in our own voices, our own experiences.

With special guest MARLIES YEARBY

POETRY AND THE BODY

This workshop will consist of movement, breathing,
and writing techniques to help access sound and text
waiting to be discovered in the body.

With TRACIE MORRIS

CONTEMPORARY/MODERN LAB

This class will focus on finding freedom in
movement while expanding physical, expressive,
and technical ranges. Movement is release-based,
athletic, and organic, and designed to challenge
the vertical axis. Components of the class include
improvisation, contact, partnering, travelling passages,
and moments of supported, uncontrolled movement.

With VINCENT E. THOMAS

MODERN/JAZZ LAB

This class is an exploration of the connections between the
physical, emotional, and spiritual centers as expressed
through rhythm and musicality. A short warm-up, stretching the
body, will be followed by across-the-floor movement. A phrase
will be given, working with syncopation, rhythm and weight changes.

With guest artist KATITI KING

IMPROVISATION LAB

In this class we will work both with building physical awareness
and connection in our bodies and scores that develop
our improvisational listening and sourcing. Physically guided
warm-ups will lead into solo, duet, and group structures. Over time,
this work builds a strong, sensitive, and deeply aware mover.

HORTON-BASED MODERN DANCE CLASS

Lester Horton developed an approach to movement that
focused on the whole body, incorporating elements as

will emphasize alignment and placement.

UNDERGROUND DANCE FUNDAMENTALS

Spend the afternoon learning the basics of b-boying
(breakdancing), house dance, and hip-hop dance with the
hottest b-girl crew on the East Coast. You’ll learn how to
toprock and perform fundamental footwork patterns, b-boy
freezes, and basic house footwork with style and finesse.

With FOX FORCE FIVE

TAP FUNDAMENTALS

This workshop will include two one-hour classes that
focus on the basics and rudiments of tap dance. Each class
will include a brief overview of the history and origins of
various steps, which will be followed with instruction for
proper execution and strong, clear articulation. It is hoped
that the workshop experience will encourage students to
further educate themselves about the art form, and therefore
help to preserve and perpetuate the art of rhythm tap dancing
for generations to come.
